Learn to Write a 5 Paragraph Essay Today

The five paragraph essay is the simplest essay format, designed specifically for students developing writing skills. In addition to this, the writers of standardized tests frequently include questions that must be answered using the five paragraph essay format. This is to measure the test taker’s writing abilities. The five paragraph essay includes the introductory paragraph, three supporting paragraphs, and finally the conclusion. These essays are often written as part of in class assignments or tests, and don’t require much research. The remainder of this posting will explain how to write a 5 paragraph essay.

Writing the Introduction

In the introductory paragraph, you will introduce the topic of the essay and your thesis statement. The thesis statement is what you use to tell the reader what you intend to prove in your essay. Many students like to begin their introductory paragraphs with something that will catch the reader’s eye. If you would like to do the same, you should consider starting your essay off with one of the following:

  • An interesting fact
  • A shocking statistic
  • A relevant story

Use any one of these three elements, and your readers are sure to take notice.

Writing the Body Paragraphs

Your five paragraph essay will contain three body paragraphs. You purpose in writing each paragraph is to provide a main point supporting your thesis statement, along with facts supporting those main points. When you write the body paragraphs, be sure to keep your thesis in mind. Don’t stray away from supporting your thesis statement by including unrelated details and other fluff.

When you finish writing each body paragraph, read it out loud. You should be able to recognize the main idea and each supporting point. If you cannot do this, you probably need to rewrite your paragraph.

Paragraph Transitions

Transitions are what you use to segue from one paragraph into the other. In the body of the essay, the best way to do this is to briefly mention what will be covered in the next paragraph. What you want to avoid is having one paragraph end abruptly, and then the next paragraph beginning just as abruptly as the one before. The best way to master transitions is to read other essays. Once you read what others have done, you will gain more understanding of how transitions work.

Writing Your Conclusion

The last thing you need to consider as you learn how to write a five paragraph essay is writing the conclusion. The conclusion is the fifth and last paragraph of your essay. This is where you summarize all of the points that you made in the body of your essay, and where you remind the reader how these points combine with one another to prove your thesis to be true. It is usually a good idea to end your conclusion paragraph with a strong statement of fact.
